Rodri Joins Barcelona From Manchester City on Four-Year Deal

FC Barcelona have officially completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City.

   

The Catalan giants confirmed the major transfer on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with the 30-year-old midfielder signing a contract that will keep him at Barcelona until June 30, 2030.


Rodri arrives at Barcelona after spending seven successful seasons at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in world football.


During his time at City, the Spanish international won multiple major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, while playing a crucial role in the club's historic treble-winning 2022/23 season.


The transfer is reportedly worth around €60 million initially, with additional performance-related bonuses, making it one of the biggest moves of the 2026 summer transfer window.


Rodri's arrival is also significant because he is the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and has been one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.


Barcelona see the Spaniard as a key addition to Hansi Flick's squad. His ability to control the tempo of matches, win possession and protect the defence is expected to strengthen the team's midfield considerably.


The move also ends weeks of speculation surrounding Rodri's future, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in signing him. However, the midfielder ultimately chose Barcelona, returning to Spanish football after seven years in England.


Rodri has already been presented as a Barcelona player and expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter with the Catalan club.


With Rodri now joining a midfield featuring stars such as Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo, Barcelona fans will be hoping the new signing can help the club compete for major domestic and European honours.
